SafeCo representatives Janet Valentine and Aaron Bond presented their "Make More Happen Award" to Walsh Duffield's Stephen Mayo and Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled's Mindy Cervoni.
BUFFALO, NY (April 14, 2016) — Walsh Duffield Companies, Inc. has earned a 2016 Safeco Insurance® Make More Happen Award for its community work with Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled. The award includes a $5,000 donation to CSDD from Safeco Insurance, along with a feature story on Safeco.com.
Stephen Mayo, Vice President at Walsh Duffield learned about CSDD about 5 years ago, and has been a strong supporter ever since. The organization helps people with developmental disabilities protect their rights, participate in society and live as independently as possible. “After I was introduced, I just wanted to get more involved,” said Mayo. He soon joined the board of CSDD’s affiliated foundation and now serves as its vice chairman.
And he brought with him the support of Walsh Duffield. The company has a legacy of giving, and in 2014, Mayo and fellow employees helped make sure the holidays were happy for more than 50 people served by CSDD.
“We were happy to help,” Mayo said. “It’s one thing to write a check, but truly getting involved is extremely rewarding.” Many Walsh Duffield employees now support the organization outside of the company’s efforts, too — 12 individuals adopted families last year.
Mayo’s dedication to the community made him a natural selection for a 2016 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award. “That money is important, because the resources offered by CSDD go far beyond holiday gifts,” said Jennifer Dowd Barczak, the coordinator of board development for the nonprofit. Nearly all of the organization’s clients — which number more than 1,500 — live below the poverty line and need support with everything from transportation to housing.
Throughout 2016, Safeco will select a total of 66 independent agencies for the awards and donate up to $330,000 to the nonprofits they support.
CSDD has been assisting the developmentally disabled in Western New York for more than 25 years. Its residential program provides 40 homes in communities around the region and includes emergency and domestic violence shelters, along with a respite house. And more than 40 additional programs offer a full range of services for personal, clinical, social and vocational needs — including employment opportunities through businesses run by CSDD clients.
